“If ‘they’ were smart enough they should have
considered all the options.” He hadn’t meant
to exactly say that out loud but once it was
he left it out in the open. His hands clench
slightly at the other’s nonchalance about the
situation. Now he’s not a saint himself when
it comes to a job but he feels a bit of uneasiness
             about this.

“Dull? Ha… right. Wouldn’t want you to get bored.”
Though his tone remained even, there was a
clear disgust on his face. Again he’s not unfamiliar
to the hired big guns like Hulkling but he’s never
been sent after one. “My guys sent me here to
see what was up. I’ve seen all I had to.” As well
as get some information of Hulkling. “You going to
clean this up or do you usually have another guy
            to come do it?”

image

The people that hired him were powerful. What they
decided to do with that power wasn’t any of his concern.
If they wanted someone dead instead of ruining their
lives, then that’s what happened. And they got the best
person for the job to do it. Over the years he’s proved
more than useful and has never talked back or asked
any more than what he needed to know to complete the
job. That was how this business worked, and it paid very
           well.

❝ Did your guys also tell you to not interfere or were you
just enjoying the show? ❞ A smirk tugged at the lips of a
previously expressionless face. A morbid sort of teasing
but that was his sense of humor. ❝ I have someone who
meets me and takes the body. Anything else you want to
           know? ❞

“… Outstanding. Maybe Jimminy needs a
few seminars on how to do his job.” The
retort is sharp and critical but Eli stands
by it, flipping the wallet close and tucking
the item back into the woman’s pocket
as if nothing had happened. Of course,
he’s not going to get a response from
Hulkling. The hired types usually were
        detach from their jobs.

“Couldn’t have simply expose her and her
contacts with all that information, Sherlock?”
Standing now, he wipes his gloves off on the
knees of his pants with a grimace. Perfect.
“And you don’t ever get tired of using the same
         method?”

image

❝ That wasn’t what I was paid to do. They give me
specifics and I do what I’m told.
EXPOSING wasn’t
a part of any of that. ❞ Though it could have been. But
what would they need him for if it was? They could
have paid someone else less than his charge to expose
this woman. No, they wanted her dead. It didn’t matter
             who would be losing her.

❝ Never ever really the same. And the jobs I get aren’t
as dull as this one was. ❞ Yes, he meant
DULL. There
wasn’t any challenge to it. He simply came in, took care
of her, and could slip back out. It was more interesting
when he had to infiltrate. ❝ If it was any easier than this,
I would have been suspicious, though. ❞

“I took a guess. Nope, but I figured you at
       least have a conscience.” There’s a tick
to his jaw while the corners of his mouth
dipped down, glancing at the poor soul
crumpled in a limp heap. Slowly he
turned over the body with his foot,
       kneeling down to search their
pockets until he found a wallet and
       quickly searched through it.

“Lena Sol, twenty five, married. From these
pictures I’m guessing she was a mother to
two kids.” A glance is spared upward, searching
the other’s face. “Maybe you should start
       asking these questions.“

image

❝ I have one. His name’s Jiminiy Cricket and
he sits on my shoulder and tells me when he
thinks I’m doing something wrong. ❞ It’s tempting
to say that he locked him in a cage and starved
him to death but he refrained. Instead watching
as the wallet was pulled out and the identity was
given. And, surprise surprise, no remorse was
       felt.

❝ I don’t go into these jobs blind. She was caught
embezzling, selling company secrets, and getting
on the wrong side of powerful people. When they
confronted her, she threatened to cause a scandal.
If not me, someone else would have done it. Least
I pocket the cash. ❞ Her death was quick and most
likely painless as well, but he didn’t feel the need
       to mention that.

“Doesn’t matter if they do it or not. A
line needs to be drawn somewhere.”
God, when did he become Mr. Morality?
Patriot’s gaze swept briefly over the scene
while he inwardly cursed. “Right. You only
shatter people’s collarbone on special occasions.
            What this guy do anyway?”

image

❝ You know what I do for a living, right? Does
moralizing sound like something I’m prone to? ❞
Arms crossed over his chest, shoulders shrugging
when he was asked what the guy did. ❝ Personally?
Nothing. He was just a contract. ❞
WAS.

“Wasn’t going to say that either. I don’t
know– try being less violent with
things? People?” Like he’s one to talk.

image

❝ It gets things done well and quickly. Usually
the people I do it to deserve it anyway. ❞ Only
                about half the time, actually.
❝ Not like I’m always violent anyway. ❞

“Not trying to keep you from it. I’m saying
you don’t have to do it like this.”

image

❝ And how do you suggest I do it? I have to warn
               you, telling me to
quit isn’t a good answer. ❞
